Behind the plastic sits an energy absorber, a reinforcement bar and the brackets that hold it all in place. On most cars built in the last decade there are parking sensors and radar in there too. So the estimate looks at what is behind your cover as well as the cover itself.
Three things decide what your bumper needs.
Scuffs, scrapes, small cracks and holes in a plastic cover can often be repaired, filled and refinished here, and the original part stays on the car. A torn or shattered cover gets replaced, and so does one that has already been repaired once in the same spot.
A cover is held on by tabs and brackets along its edges. If those have snapped, a repaired cover will not sit flush against the fenders, so replacement is the safer call even when the face of the bumper looks fixable.
A bent reinforcement bar or a crushed absorber gets replaced whatever the cover looks like, because those parts are there to take the next impact. A sensor in the damaged area adds one more step, and it is covered below.
Either way, the color is matched to your car’s paint code and blended into the panels on either side by our PPG-certified paint technician, so there is no line where the repair stops. If the damage runs past the bumper into a fender, a headlight or the structure, it becomes a collision repair and the estimate says so.
The one step we don’t do ourselves.
Parking sensors, blind-spot radar and sometimes a forward camera sit in or behind the bumper cover. A sensor does not have to be broken to need attention. If it has moved at all, it has to be re-aimed to the manufacturer’s specification before the car is safe to drive, and that holds whether the cover was repaired or replaced.
An independent calibration specialist does that work. It is scheduled after the bodywork and paint are finished, and your car stays at our shop while it happens. The specialist’s post-scan report, which shows whether any fault codes remain, goes home with you.

What goes on your car, and who pays for it.
Once you’ve filed a claim with your insurer, Fix Auto Bellevue handles it from there. We write the estimate, and if more damage turns up behind the cover, we photograph it and send it to your adjuster as a supplement for approval.
Some policies call for an aftermarket bumper cover. We follow the policy, but if a part doesn’t fit or perform, we document it and order the manufacturer’s part. What people ask about bumper repair.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a bumper?
Repair is almost always cheaper. Plastic covers with scuffs, small cracks or holes can be filled and refinished for a fraction of a replacement, and the original part stays on the car. Replacement wins only when the mounting tabs are broken, the cover is torn, or the reinforcement bar behind it is bent.
Can you match my car's exact paint color?
Yes. We use your vehicle's paint code and computerized color matching to mix an exact match, then blend it into the surrounding panels so there's no visible line. Factory paint fades over time, and that blending is what makes a repair disappear into the rest of the car.
Does a new bumper need a sensor calibration?
If a parking sensor, blind-spot radar or camera sits in or behind the bumper, yes. The sensor does not have to be damaged; it only has to have moved. Calibration re-aims it to factory specification, and an independent calibration specialist performs it rather than our own technicians.
Will insurance pay for a new bumper?
Usually, if you are claiming. Bumper damage from a collision falls under your collision coverage, and damage from something else, such as a falling branch, falls under comprehensive. Your deductible applies either way. Whether the cover is repaired or replaced is documented on the estimate, not decided by the policy.
Do you repair bumpers on all makes and models?
Yes, foreign and domestic, with EVs and hybrids included. The shop is I-CAR Gold Class and Subaru Certified. Where a bumper carries sensors or a camera, an independent calibration specialist re-aims them at our shop once the bodywork is done, so the car does not leave.
What happens if there is more damage behind the bumper cover?
We document it before any more work is done. On an insurance claim, we photograph what we find and send it to your adjuster as a supplement. If you are paying yourself, Washington law requires your approval before the bill goes past 110% of the written estimate. A cracked absorber or a bent bracket is a common find.
Can a plastic bumper be repaired?
Yes. Most bumper covers are plastic, and scuffs, scrapes, small cracks and holes can be filled and refinished at our shop instead of replaced. A torn cover, snapped mounting tabs, or a cover already repaired in the same spot gets replaced. Either way, the paint is matched to your car's paint code and blended into the panels beside it.
Can you legally drive with a broken bumper?
Only if it still meets Washington's equipment rules. RCW 46.37.513 requires the bumper system to be kept in good operational condition, and RCW 46.37.517 bars protrusions that could hurt a pedestrian and a bumper sticking out past its original line. Driving a car that breaks those rules is a traffic infraction under RCW 46.37.010.
